So how does it work? (let's keep it simple) Every home, apartment, garage or business has either single phase or 3 phase power, all residential homes have single phase power. You will notice on every breaker panel 2 rows of breakers, one row on the left and one on the right, a clothes dryer runs on 220 volt and you can identify which breaker it is because you will see 2 breakers tied together with "30" written on the toggle. This is for the clothes dryer, the same breaker with a "50" on it is for the electric range if you have one or it could feed a sub panel to your garage. Every panel has 2 "legs" of 110 power coming in to it, every second breaker gets its feed from a different leg. When you combine both legs you get 220. So let's look at some wall outlets on your main floor. There are usually just a few outlets on one wall being fed by one breaker, another wall is fed by a different breaker, outlets down a hallway are most likely on yet another breaker. First, you take one extension cord and plug it into the converter box and the other end into any wall outlet. Then take the other extension cord and plug it into the converter box and plug the other end into an outlet on another wall or down the hallway or into a bedroom. You will know when you have found a "different leg" of 110 because you will hear an audible "clunk" as the large relay in the converter box closes. The volt gauge will read 220/230 volts! You now have a 15 amp capacity 220/230 volt power source to run virtually anything! |
